Police are wanting to speak to the driver in relation to a fleeing driver incident.

A driver has managed to evade police following a fleeing incident in Whakatane earlier today.

The incident resulted in road spikes being deployed at the entrance of the town.

A police media spokesperson says it happened before 10.30am.

“A police unit spotted someone they wanted to speak to in relation to a fleeing driver incident last week.

“Police didn't pursue the car but they did deploy road spikes near the Landing Road Bridge, in case the car went that way.

“We did not end up locating the car again, but we will continue making enquiries to try and locate the driver.”

People with information about the incident are asked to contact Whakatane Police on 07 308 5255.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.
