UPDATED 12.05PM: A fire at a property in Tauriko is believed to be the cause of an unattended burn-off.

Greerton fire station officer Neil Brown says the fire occurred just after 11am.

Police received a call about smoke in the area at about 11.20am.

“This spread to the fence then a shed on the property. Initial cause indicates this has happened from an unattended burn-off.

“Because it's a windy day the fire has spread.”

A reporter at the scene says the owner of the property is on site.

Reports are coming of a vegetation fire on State Highway 29, near Tauriko.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says vegetation and a shed is on fire near the highway.

Firefighters are at the scene.
