Body found under Wairoa Bridge

Reports are coming in of a suspected drowning in the Wairoa area, north of Bethlehem.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says there was someone wrapped in a blanket under the Wairoa Bridge.

"It happened about 15 to 20 minutes ago and my sister is stuck in traffic in the area.

"I believe it was a drowning."

Emergency services have been called to the scene.

People are being advised to avoid the area as police investigate what has happened.

want to be negative, but people are always jumping off this bridge, and sooner or later this happens, very sad outcome, wish all concerned, love for their loss, another broken family, and i takeme old hat off to responders to this Police ambulance and all others there, they are all very brave and see a lot of things we never seee, ive seen a lot in my life time including finding my brother inlaws brother drowned at Kai Iwi beach many yrs ago and being 7yrs old and finding him first was a shock, anyway Sunlive another sad story and thankyou for bringing same, you are all AWESOME THERE,Thankyou, 10-4 out. phew.
