Tens of thousands of teenagers will be hitting the refresh button on their computers today as their exam results are released.

The qualifications authority will upload more than 600,000 NCEA marks for around 168,000 students, including for the controversial level one maths exam that left many students disgruntled.

Students can enter the Learner Login section of the website to view their results while marked NCEA examination papers are returned to students from late January.

“If students want a copy of their Record of Achievement, these can be requested tomorrow and will be mailed out to students,” says NZQA communications spokesperson Lisa Gibbison.

The NCEA math exam had the spotlight on it last year when students, teachers and parents voiced concerns over the exam, which many believe was unusually difficult.

In a statement released online, NZQA says it's confident in the quality of the examination which met the specifications available to schools in advance of the school year.

Tauranga Boys' College deputy principal and mathematics teacher Stephen Tisch says while he feels for the students, he too stands by the paper.

“There was some surprise from students, more around the presentation of the questions,” he says.

“They didn't look like questions they'd seen before.

“I'm a maths teacher myself, I've had a look at the questions and the underlying content is the same, it's just that the question looks new.”

Speaking about today's pending results, an NCEA spokesperson says the authority is confident there would be no delays and extra staff were on hand to answer questions.

Students who sat digital exams as part of the Digital Trials and Pilots programme will get their marks on January 23 .
