Charlotte and Oliver took out the top spots for the most popular baby names for girls and boys in 2017.

Oliver has remained the most popular boys name for the fifth year running, while Charlotte has bumped Olivia off the top spot to make its return as the most popular girls name for 2017.

Each year, the Department of Internal Affairs releases a list of the most popular baby names for boys and girls registered in New Zealand.

The top 100 names make up only a small proportion of all names given to babies, with nearly 13,000 unique first names registered for children born in 2017.
