An investigation is underway after a person had to be airlifted off a ship off the tip of the Coromandel this morning.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the area, following reports of a critically injured person at 6.30am.

The vessel is understood to be anchored near Channel Island.

A police spokesperson says they were “advised there was an incident on a boat in the Channel Island area but we're not 100 per cent sure what's happened”.

"Someone has been transported to Auckland."

Police are looking into the matter.
