Four men are now in police custody after an incident in Maungatapu this morning. File photo.

A man fleeing from police tried to evade capture by swimming along the Welcome Bay estuary in Tauranga, but was unsuccessful.

The man was part of a group reported to police for suspicious activity in a car in the suburb of Maungatapu.

Police stopped the vehicle shortly after 9am on Fantail Drive.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, while three other occupants fled on foot.

A dog unit was called in to track the men, who were in the estuary. One more was subsequently taken into custody.

Another man was located swimming in the water, heading towards the Rotary Park end of the estuary.

Police successfully arrested him just before 12pm.

All four are now in custody, although a police spokesperson was unable to say whether any charges have been laid.

Dumb...

dumb, dumb and dumber? I don't understand why people run from the police? You can't out run a radio? Besides, it seems, no matter what crooks have done, they just go to court and get a smack on the hand because they have 'issues' (obviously)... and they get let off... so why knock yourself out and make the boys in blue cranky? It doesn't make sense....

Unreal

Just shows you how dumb offenders are. Probably were as thick in school.
