In wet conditions at Rotorua International Stadium last night, the Bay of Plenty Steamers were provided with plenty of opportunities but fell short to the Wellington Lions, who won 31-10, says the match report from BOP Rugby.
It was to be Wellington's winger Malo Tuitama whom scored the first points of the match touching down in the corner. Jackson Garden-Bachop successful with the boot added the extras to take the visitors to an early 7-0 lead.
It wasn't until the thirty fourth minute until the next points were scored. Again Wellington was on the board. This time Isaia Walker-Leawere forced his way over the line to extend the lead out to 12-0 at the break.
Returning from the break the Steamers held onto their possession and capitalised early through the boot of Mike Delany to get the Steamers on the board.
However the Wellington clinical on attack saw Ben Lam on the end of a successful Garden-Bachop chip to the corner to extend their lead out to 17-3.
The Steamers rolled on the subs, with fresh legs on the field, substitute halfback Luke Campbell chased down a loose ball to go over the line. However Campbell was denied following TMO review after Chase Tiatia was unable to get the off load away before being carried out over the side-line.
With ten minutes remaining it was game on. Following a strong build up by the Bay of Plenty forward pack, Delany kicked a beautifully weighted chip kick into the arms of Terrence Hepetema to see him dive over the line. With Delany successfully converting the Steamers were within seven.
However it was the Wellington Lions who clinched two consecutive tries to simmer a Steamers come back. First to Wes Goosen and second to Asafo Aumua with Garden-Bachop picking up the extras for both saw the visitor's claim a 31-10 win over the Bay of Plenty Steamers.
Wellington 31 (Malo Tuitama, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Ben Lam, Wes Goosen, Asafo Aumua tries; Jackson Garden-Bachop 3 con) Bay of Plenty 10 (Terrence Hepetema try; Mike Delany pen, con) . HT: 12-0.
