Two people have been arrested following an incident in the Coromandel where a police officer was forced to fire upon a vehicle that was attempting to run him over.

Waikato Police arrested two people last night in connection to the incident in Hikuai on Monday night, in which a driver attempted to run down a police officer during a vehicle stop, ramming a police vehicle in the process.

Acting Detective Inspector Dean Anderson says a 37-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman will appear in the Hamilton District Court today, facing charges including burglary and aggravated assault.

Further charges are being considered.

"We are grateful that this matter was brought to a conclusion without further incident.

"A big thank you to the members of the public who contacted us with information in regards to this investigation.

"The officer involved in the incident is doing well and we are providing ongoing support.

"As this matter is now before the court, police is not in a position to comment further."
