Child seriously injured in collision

A child has been injured and is in serious condition after being hit by a courier van in Parkvale.

The Tauranga Intermediate pupil was biking across a pedestrian crossing when a red courier van, driving slowly, knocked the boy off his bike on Fraser Street, near the Merivale shops, say police.

Police and emergency services were called to the incident at around 3.15pm.

Acting senior sergeant Bruce Gordon says the boy was knocked unconscious and is now in Tauranga Hospital.

The northbound lane of Fraser Street is no longer blocked.

 

EARLIER:

A child has been injured and is in a serious condition after being hit by a vehicle in Parkvale.

A caller to the SunLive newsroom says she saw the boy knocked off his bike by a van on Fraser Street, near the Merivale shops.

She says emergency services are on the scene, with traffic being directed around the incident.

A police spokesperson confirms they were called to the incident, in which a car has hit a pedestrian, at around 3.15pm.

She says the child received serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

The northbound lane of Fraser Street is blocked, but the southbound lane is currently open to traffic.

driving slowly that would a first.............as for getting knocked of ones bike, you should be walking your bike across a road, pedestrian crossing or not, and as far as i know its a two part pedestrian crossing you go half way across stop have another look if its clear you continue across...... hope all involved are doing ok.

"The Tauranga Intermediate pupil was biking across a pedestrian crossing". Intermediate age is old enough to know and apply the law. "If you want to use a pedestrian crossing to cross the road you must get off your cycle and walk. "
