Powerco is in the process of restoring power across the city after power was cut to about 22,483 homes across Tauranga this afternoon.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says contractors are investigating the issue and are working to restore power as soon as possible.

From a maximum of more than 22,000 affected properties at 2.30pm, the number had dropped to 2029 properties in Brookfield by 4.20pm.

SunLive earlier report power out in Matua, Brookfield, Otumoetai, Bethlehem, Bellevue, Te Puna, Lower Kaimai, Omokoroa and as far north as Katikati and Tanners Point.

With traffic lights out on some city intersections, police are appealing to drivers to be careful and courteous.

“A number of the traffic lights are out,” says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager senior sergeant Ian Campion.

“If drivers could take extreme care and apply the usual giving way rule, and be particularly careful and courteous.”
