Educating your children about activity

It's a new year full of new resolutions and new exciting things to look forward to.
For some parents, it can be hard to find time, the motivation to exercise, or suitable fun activities that are fun for the whole whanau/family to enjoy.
Getting out and about is a great way to keep your whole whanau/family fit and healthy, plus your children can learn new skills that will help them in life and it is a great way to make new friends that have similar interests.
The results from the New Zealand Health Survey from the Ministry of Health conducted in 2016/2017 show that nearly 100,000 children aged two to 14 years were obese. We do not need to put that burden onto our children, but as the adults in our children's lives, we suggest you seriously think about activities available for your children to be active.
The key is to make sure your children are having fun. Ensure your children are outside more often, which will help them grow into strong and healthy adults.
This will help them develop more confidence in themselves and will establish healthy habits that are great for their body so that they are more likely to live a long and healthy life.
Do not forget to think about what food is on the table as well. Treats are okay, as long as they are occasional foods, not on the daily menu.
Here are some ideas to get yourself and your whanau/family active in the New Year:
- If your children are interested in joining a sporting team, keep an eye out at your child's school or your local club about signing up for a sporting team. Getting into something new can help challenge you and you may even find a new passion!
- Try to leave your car behind and go for a walk or a bike ride to the beach as a whanau/family. This can be a great bonding experience for the whole whanau/family and a great way to sneak in some exercise for the day.
- You and your whanau/family can spend the day finding the answers to Sport Bay of Plenty's Avanti Plus Mount Maunganui Scavenger Hunt around Mount Maunganui. With plenty of prizes up for grabs, there is lots of fun to be had!
- Have a go at biking to school or to work. You will feel more awake when you arrive, and you might even burn off some of those breakfast calories.
